Caring about not-caring. Analyzing my own apathy.
I feel that if an issue isn’t visible and has no immediate effect on my lifestyle then I don’t care. If it’s a conflict taking place across both atlantic and pacific oceans, I don’t care. If the Whatever-the-fuck River is polluted to shit, I don’t care. I wish I had the capacity to care about the environment, people whom I’ve never met, random crap, I wish I did. I wish that I could open up the paper, read a magazine, watch the most unbiased news in the world and give a shit. So why don’t I?
It’s not that I don’t care. I’m actually a very altruistic person. It’s that giving a shit won’t change anything. I guess it’s easier and less heart wrenching to turn a blind and than to do anything helpful. I guess I’ve just gotten used to living in a world where we as people grow up to learn that we can’t do shit.
So what now? It seems that either Canada has to be overthrown by a Dicator that takes away at least one of my basic rights or all potable water in the world is reduced to 2L. Even that merely gets my attention and remember that caring is a lot different than doing.
